I just arrived in Krakow Poland awaiting the rest of the Global Care Force Ukraine team. Krakow is a fun city. It was largely untouched by World War II and has a well preserved old town. It is walkable and tourist friendly with English well understood. It is a bit cold in February, but you can’t have everything. This is my second trip to serve people in the formerly occupied areas of the Ukraine. These people endured armies rolling over their land (twice) as well as 6 months of occupation by the Russian army. I don’t know that these people have suffered more or less than people in other war torn zones such as the Sudan or Gaza, but I feel their call.
One of my side projects this time is to take pictures for a presentation on the environmental effects of Russia’s invasion. Environmental damage is an underreported aspect off any conflict and the Russians will use any tactic to gain an advantage. This includes deliberately destroying the Kharkov dam with massive downstream flooding and contamination. They have destroyed industrial complexes with resultant chemical releases. All of these and many more have harmed the health of the people in these areas. I will try to find pictures that I can use to illustrate this.
I am looking forward to seeing the Ukrainian team again. They are really good people who are good at what they do. I will deploy with a whole new group of American medical personnel. There will be another two physicians and a physician’s assistant. They have all been pleasant on our Zoom meetings and I am looking forward to getting to know them.
Thanks for following and supporting my mission.
